Both were in the Civil War, but Merrifield was killed at the Battle of Vicksburg, May 22, 1863. His father was one of the earliest settlers in Owen Co. A brother, Newton J. Walters, lives next to McDonald. His sisters, Louisa J. and Nancy Ann married respectively Wm. A. and John Ryan. One sister lives in Illinois and brother Columbus lives on the home place in Owen County."]
