Married first wife on Dec. 17, 1805; they had 3 children: Smith, Jane, and Emily. Married second wife, the sister of his first wife, on Nov. 21, 1825 in Jennings Co., Ind. Married third wife on Oct. 5, 1826; they had 3 children: Marion, John Allan, and Mary Ann. Married for the fourth time, to Martha McGammon Pierce, on Oct. 11, 1850; they had a daughter Emma. Licensed in Kentucky as a Baptist minister in 1804; moved to Madison, Ind. in 1807. Elder Vawter became an influential figure throughout the area, as a magistrate, U.S. Marshal, Frontier Ranger, minister, and member of the state legislature. Donated money to Morgantown, Ind. for its Baptist Church and set up a general store there. |
