| Other | Age 82. "Mrs. Emily Pinney Tilford died Saturday March 4th at the residence of her niece, Mrs. Michael Sells, where she has lived for the past 5 years or so since the death of her husband. She was born in Brookville, Indiana, 2 May 1816. At age 3, she and her father moved to this part of the state. She married in 1833 to William Pinney of Windsor, Vermont. He died in 1873, and in 1882 she married M.C. Tilford. John Whetzel, the grandfather of Mrs. Tilford, was born in Switzerland in 1733 and came to this country in 1740. He first settled in Pennsylvania and in 1754 married Mary Bonnett, a French Huguenot. He then moved to Virginia where he was prominent in the Border Wars and paid his men out of his own funds. Her father, Jacob Whetzel, was a guide for General Foremans regiment during the Revolutionary War, and fought under General Harrison during the War of 1812. Her mother, Ruhama Shepherd, was the granddaughter of Thomas Shepherd, the founder of Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Her second husband, Milton C. Tilford, was a brother to the late Dr. Salem A. Tilford." Burial was at Crown Hill Cemetery." |
