Other | Amos Stout died Tuesday afternoon. He was one of the old citizens of the county. He located in Lamb's Bottom, Jefferson Township [Morgan County] in 1836 and became one of the largest land owners in the county. He was 72 years old...The funeral of Amos Stout, deceased, occurred this morning. On account of the severe weather, many who attended the church ceremony did not go to the cemetery. "Amos Stout was born about 8 miles northwest of the city of New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana, and died in the 72nd year of his age. He was the 3rd son and 5th child of Daniel and Sarah (Davis) Stout. His father was a native of Tennessee, and came to the Territory of Indiana about 1790 and located in what is now Harrison County. Being a millwright by trade, he built and ran, for several years, a sawmill for General William Henry Harrison. Mr. Stout's mother's maiden name was Davis, and she was a native of Kentucky. She was the sister of Col. Davis who was killed in the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811...Amos and Sarah Stout had 8 children, with 7 still living." |
