His father died when Henry was a baby; he and his two brothers were placed under the guardianship of their uncle, John Spoon, Jr. Their mother then married Jacob Amick. Henry married his first wife on Sept. 17, 1846. They had a daughter, Sarah Jane. Wife died in 1850. Married second wife on May 23, 1858. They had 6 children: Margaret Ellen, Nannie Caroline, Oliver Smith, John Alvin, Rose Zetta, and Mary Etta. Documents from the Indiana State Archives indicate that Henry was admitted to the state Hospital for the Insane on three different occasions: 1869, 1873, and 1877. He was considered dangerous and violent, and was said to be cruel to his family. Henry died while trying to escape from the Insane Asylum; he lowered a rope made of bed sheets from his fourth-floor window, and fell to his death when the rope broke.
