Skelton of the Centerton area tells of two young couples returning from church; when a storm came up, they rode into the yard of Jackson Record. As the girls stepped on the porch, George Smith and C. Record started to unsaddle the horses, a lightning bolt hit, killing George Smith and two horses. The others were knocked down and stunned. Funeral services for George Smith were held at Mt. Pleasant Church." Preceded in death by two younger brothers: John, who died in 1850, and Robert, who died just a month before George. |
