"Died Monday at his home. He was born near Cope, and was the son of John and Edna Ennis Skaggs from Kentucky; they were early pioneers in the area. He had 5 brothers, 1 of whom is dead, and 4 sisters, 2 of whom have died. In 1849, he married Lucinda Carrell, and to them were born 8 children, 2 daughters and 6 sons. His wife died 7 April 1884, and in July 1890, he married Mrs. Elizabeth Miles, who survives him. He lived near Cope until 7 years ago when he moved to Martinsville." Father of 8 children: Harriett, Willie J., Sarah Catherine, Thomas A., John W., James, Alfred, and Ward.
