Other	From Corinth -- Samuel Shields, eldest son of William H. Shields, committed suicide this morning by hanging himself. He has not been of sound mind for years. Oldest son of Harrison Shields, "a prominent farmer of Ashland Township...committed suicide by hanging himself in the barn and left a note about the suicide. A few months before, he had mention[ed] to his mother [that he might take] poison, and since that time, the family had been watching him. He was 33 years old and unmarried." [Cemetery index gives date of death as Aug. 9, 1888.][From the Martinsville Republican for April 29, 1886: "Samuel Shields, who has not been of his right mind for years, is sick and deranged, and it is thought he will not recover."]
