Other | Age 92. Civil War veteran: Co. F, 97 Ind. "Enlisted in Owen County, when he was 18 years old, in the 97th Indiana Volunteers Infantry. He was stationed for a time in 1862 at Terre Haute under Colonel Caterson, and from there went to Indianapolis for a sham battle. He was at Louisville, Kentucky for about two months, and then was on guard duty for provision trains. He recalls that 16 boats loaded with soldiers under command of Sherman left in the fall of 1862 for Vicksburg -- but Mr. Robertson left the boat at Memphis because he and about 100 other soldiers contracted the measles..." Rejoined his regiment and was sent to Vicksburg. "Took part in the battles of Chattanooga and Mission Ridge, and the famous March to the Sea with Sherman..." Following his discharge, returned to Indiana and traveled for several years in government work. "He came to Mooresville last January. His home is on West High Street." (Source: Mooresville Times, Sept. 14, 1933; article on Civil War veterans.) Had been sick with heart complications for eight weeks. Buried at Spencer. |
