Other | Son of Iven and Lona Richards. Grew up with five sisters in Brown County and then Martinsville, where his father was Chief of Police. He was fourteen, a basketball player at the time, when he contracted polio and could never walk again without using metal crutches. He modified cars in order to drive and never used handicap plates. Refused using a wheelchair for almost 70 years. Graduate of Martinsville HS and put himself through college, earning a degree in accounting at IU, while working as a police dispatcher in Martinsville. Became a CPA, worked at Cummins Engine Co. in Columbus, retiring at age 55. Married in 1954. In 1970s, bought and operated Columbus Village Apartments, with partners. Predeceased by his parents and his sisters Bette Jane Petro, Doris Clark, Marion Kindred, and Enna Kathleen Critser-Randol. |
