"Our town was thrown into considerable excitement Sunday morning by the news that John Ratecliff (sic), a wealthy farmer and an old and much respected citizen of Green Township, had been murdered and his body thrown into the hog pen. He had been badly eaten and mutilated by the hogs. Lynn Reynolds, who lives in the neighborhood, was arrested and placed in jail for the crime." [Lynden "Lynn" Reynolds was later acquitted and released; the murder was never solved.] First wife died in 1868; married second wife in 1869.
