Other Age 91. Son of Hezekiah and Eunice P. Morgan. Quaker and Civil War Veteran; member of the famous Persimmon Brigade. "Born near Mooresville in the Samuel Brown log cabin, he enlisted at Cartersburg, when he was 18 years old, in the 117th Indiana Regiment [Co. A.] After engaging in a sham battle at Danville, he was sent to Kentucky and Tennessee, and took part in the battle of Cumberland Gap. On the below-zero New Year's night of 1863-1864, he was forced to sleep outdoors, and by morning his clothes were frozen to him and he was unconscious for hours until fellow soldiers rubbed him again and again in snow. For a long while he was imprisoned on the mountain without food, except corn stolen from the mules, and he saw many skirmishes and hazardous guerrilla fighting. He has lived in Mooresville practically all his life. His home is on West Main Street." (Source: Mooresville Times, Sept. 14, 1933; article on Civil War veterans.) He had a blacksmith shop on West High Street in Mooresville, west of the Burk Grocery.
