Other | Founder of Mooresville. Born in North Carolina, January 21, 1799. Came to Washington County and settled near Salem in 1818. Located in Mooresville area in 1823. In 1824, he bought 160 acres of land and laid out the town of Mooresville. Ran a successful general store in town; lived on a farm in what is now the middle of town (at Madison Street, just south of High St.) Father of 5 children: Jane (Mrs. Robert) Newby (who died in 1852), Joseph (died in infancy), Elizabeth (died as a small child), Mary M. (Mrs. Washington) Conduitt (died in 1853), and Margaret, who survives him. Died in his Madison Township home, at the age of 90. |
