[From the Martinsville Republican for Jan. 6, 1887: "Mr. and Mrs. John McGinnis of Adams Township celebrated their Golden Anniversary on December 22nd. Mr. McGinnis is of hardy stock of Scotch and Irish. His great-grandfather McGinnis was born in Ireland, while on his mother's side, her parents came from Scotland, and his grandfather on his mother's side was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. John McGinnis was born in Kentucky. His father moved to Owen County, Ind. when John was quite young. His father died when he was about 10 years old. Fifty years ago, he married Mary Donaldson, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Donaldson. She was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky, June 23rd, 1818, and moved to Indiana with her parents in 1834 and settled in Morgan County. From this union, 13 children were born, 8 boys and 5 girls, with 6 boys and 4 girls still living. Four sons served in the Civil War: William, John, Harrison, and Jack. Harrison was killed in the war. We wish Uncle John and Aunt Mary many happy days."]
