Other | Age 91. Born Feb. 27, 1794 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia; daughter of Zachariah and Winifred Mustain Lewis, both natives of Virginia. Married Nov. 28, 1812 in Pittsylvania. Mother of 7 children: Eliza A., Nancy J., Elijah Thomas, Mary J., Sarah Ann, William M., and Margaret J. "From Hindoostan -- Mrs. McCoun (sic), aged 91 years, died last week and was buried on Jack's Defeat near Ellettsville. She was an early settler here, and was a pensioner of the War of 1812." [From the Martinsville Republican for Jan. 4, 1883: "From Washington Township, Monroe County -- The oldest citizen in our township, Mourning McCown, was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, near Pittsylvania Court House. She was married in 1822. In 1823, they crossed the mountains and came to Indiana, settling near Spencer, Owen County, on Rattlesnake Creek. In 1827, they settled near where Ellettsville now is, on a small creek called Jack's Defeat. Mrs. McCown's husband was a veteran of the War of 1812, and he died about 11 years ago. She now lives with her daughter, Mrs. Neal, on Bryant's Creek."] |
