Other Killed By the Cars -- A Sad Accident -- John Mathews, one of the oldest citizens of this county, was struck by a freight engine while he was walking the I & V tracks, 2 miles North of Brooklyn, last Tuesday morning, and almost instantly killed. He was the brother of the late Judge Mathews. He was born November 4th, 1799 and was 83 years and 10 months old. He came to Morgan County from Ohio in 1820, with his father, George Mathews. "Born in North Carolina...moved with his father to South Carolina and then to Ohio when quite young. Here he resided until 1820 when he moved to Morgan County...and settled on a farm where Centerton now stands. [He] was one of a family of 11, 7 brothers and 4 sisters. Of this large family, only 2 are living...He was the father of 11 children, 6 sons and 5 daughters. His wife and 5 children have preceded him to the spirit land." Buried on the family farm.
