| Other | Age 76. Parents: Hezekiah and Elizabeth (Bowman) Johnson. Born in Morgan Co., Ind.; died in Indianapolis. Married on July 26, 1855, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He and brother Frank headed for California for the Gold Rush of 1849, but only made it as far as Omaha, where their entire outfit for the trip was stolen. Jesse and Sarah had their first 2 sons in Iowa, then moved to Morgan Co., Ind., where he established a saw mill between Monrovia and Mooresville. Built a home there; the couple had 4 more sons. The place also had a store and a school, and became known as "Gasburg" after Jesse, who was nicknamed "Gas" Johnson for his great liking for conversation and argument. He later moved to Indianapolis and operated a planing mill and excelsior factory on the west side of town. |
