| Other | Born Oct. 31, 1797. "Died at his residence in Ray Township, Morgan County, Phillip Hodges, aged 89 years, 5 months, and 8 days. He lived 2 1/2 miles West of Paragon. Born in Randolph County, North Carolina, October 31st, 1797. At the age of 21, he set out, crossing the mountains at Deep Gap, Bean's Station; crossing the Ohio River at Westport, and landed at his brother's, in Washington County, in the autumn of 1818. He bought the first tract of the New Purchase near Gosport, in Terre Haute, September 4th, 1820, from Col. John Vawter, the Land Officer. In May 1819, he married to Miss Mary, daughter of Ephraim Goss, who founded Gosport. He was the father of 11 children, 8 sons and 3 daughters; 6 of them are still living. His wife, Aunt Polly, died April 8th, 1875...Ephraim Hodges, his oldest son, was a member of the Morgan County Board of Commissioners. Joseph and Thomas, 2 other sons, were in the Civil War. One of his daughters was the wife of Major P.M. Blankenship and the younger is the wife of Lafayette Sims, now living in or near Fort Scott, Kansas. His youngest son, Henry Hodges, was Clerk of the Morgan County Circuit Court." |
