In 1852, began learning the blacksmith trade with Henderson & Johnson of Mooresville. Opened his own blacksmith shop in 1855. Married Eliza Stephenson, daughter of Joseph Stephenson, on March 9, 1856 in Owen Co., Ind. Civil War veteran: Co. F, 71st Ind. Vol., then 6th Indiana Cavalry, then 149th Ind. Vol. Was captured at the battles of Richmond, Ky. and Muldraugh Hill. After the war, he became a grocer in Spencer, Owen Co.
