Hanthorn was born in Shippenburg, Pennsylvania, the 17th of April, about the year 1830; was left an orphan at 7 years of age; emigrated to Indiana at the age of 16; was a painter by trade." Civil War veteran: Co. H, 20th Indiana Volunteers. Returning to Indianapolis after the war, "he was shortly afterwards married to Miss Eliza Carter, a daughter of William Carter of Morgan County. To them were born 3 children, 2 daughters who still survive him, and one son who died several years ago. For 12 years, he was a helpless paralytic." |
