He was born in Harpersfield, Delaware County, New York, and was married to Cynthia Odell in 1840. He moved to Indiana in 1849, and came to Martinsville in 1871. His wife died 15 January 1892. They had 6 children, with only 2 surviving: Preston of Martinsville and Irvin of Kansas. He was a Civil War veteran[: Musician with the Band, 22 Ind.]"
