She came to Madison Twp., Morgan Co., Ind. with her son Samuel and her son-in-law, John Henderson. They were among the earliest settlers of the township. "Grandmother Duree...was a very intelligent woman. Her people took a very active part in fighting the Indians in the first settlement of Kentucky. Her father moved into Boone's fort shortly after it was built...Her father was killed by the Indians and some of her husband's people (the Durees) were also killed...After the death of her son, she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Leathers, until her death. She must have been nearly one hundred years old when she died." (Source: Mooresville Guide article on Madison Twp. history, 1897). |
