"Came to Indianapolis in 1833 and settled near Monrovia; around a year later, moved to Mooresville, where he has lived ever since, being at his death the oldest male citizen of the village except for its founder, Samuel Moore." Married first wife Loving (Lovey) Jackson on Jan. 3, 1836, in Morgan Co.; she lived only a few years. On Sept. 10, 1843, married Delilah Dorrel, who survives with 8 children, nearly all of whom are grown. Mr. Carlisle's father was a soldier in the War of 1812. Member of the M.E. Church, where he was a class leader for about 30 years and a steward for a long time. Supported himself as a blacksmith at the age of 15. [From the Diary of Elam Harvey for Oct. 26, 1877: "Bro. (Wm.) Carlisle died this afternoon about two o'clock after four weeks of great suffering. One leg was mortified almost to the knee...In his death the church loses a staunch defender and heaven gains a spirit."]
