| Other | Age 53. "J.W. Brown, a well known and well to do citizen of Green Township, has been murdered. He was found in bed, murdered, probably by blows from an axe, and his wife was seriously injured in the same manner. He died at 5 o'clock this morning. Robbery was the motive, and two pairs of foot prints were found leading from the house." [Investigation into the murder received quite a bit of coverage in the newspaper over the next two years; in the Martinsville Republican for Feb. 10, 1881: "(Willard) Buck Brown, who was sentenced to the penitentiary for the murder of (Joseph) Wash Brown, his father, was granted a new trial." The final report was found in the June 23, 1881 issue of the Republican: "In the second trial of Buck Brown, which was venued to Danville, he was found guilty of manslaughter and was sentenced to two years in prison in the death of his father."][Martinsville Republican, May 8, 1890: "Story about the murder of Joseph W. Brown, from an Indianapolis paper, which was supposedly told by a daughter of Mr. Brown...In a supposed deathbed statement, his wife, who had eventually moved to Howard County and who had died about a year ago, said that she and their two sons, Jim and Buck, had killed him. It had long been thought by many that Mrs. Brown knew more about the murder than what she had said."] |
