| Other | Mayor Baker Dead -- Sunday, Mayor Harvey Baker died at the home of his son, Newton D. Baker. He was the oldest son of John C. and Elizabeth McDaniel Baker, and was born in Washington Township, Morgan County. He was a Civil War veteran. After the war, in 1866, he married Miss Martha Hollar, daughter of a Methodist minister, Jacob Lafever, of Baker Township. Mrs. Baker died in February 1886, and he then married Mrs. Malinda Harrison Stipp, a widow with 2 small daughters. She died 29 August 1903, and afterwards he made his home with his 2 sons. He was elected mayor of Martinsville 5 September 1904, but resigned because of illness the first of the year. |
