Had been hauling wood from his father's farm, five miles from town; "was returning home in the afternoon when the horses became frightened at a dog the boy had with him...The team ran down the road until they reached the culvert near Main Street, when the front wheel dropped off the boards into the ditch." Homer was thrown forward, in front of the wheel, which struck him on the shoulder, passing across the neck, the back wheel as it passed over him making a deep cut on the left side of the head. Death occurred almost instantly. Parents: Joshua M. and R. M. Davis. Family lived on Plainfield Road. [From the Diary of Elam Harvey for Aug. 17, 1878: "Joshua Davis' team run away with Homer and killed him instantly. His head was mashed badly."] |
