Survived By Four daughters: Mrs. Kate McBride of Washington, D.C., with whom the deceased had made his home since 1873; Mrs. Phoebe Smith, the youngest daughter who resides in Penn.; the other two, Mrs. Ida Parks and Mrs. Viola Grubbs are residents of this city; also, one brother, who lives in Ottawa, Illinois.
Other Judge Griggs died suddenly in Washington, D.C. in the 73rd year of his age. Born in Baltimore, Maryland; son of Ebenezer and Hepzibah Bartholomew Griggs, both natives of Connecticut. Parents died in 1823, leaving him an orphan at the age of 8. Married in 1844 in Jennings Co., Ind. Father of 8 children, including Kate Ione, twins Mary Viola and Ida Imogene, and Phoebe Hutchinson Griggs. Lawyer, judge, and state senator. Civil War veteran: 33rd Ind. Vol. Inf. [From the Martinsville Republican for Dec. 22, 1887: "Mrs. J.R. McBride and son Tad and daughter Katie of Washington city accompanied the corpse of Judge Griggs, who was Mrs. McB's father, to this city."]
