He married Catherine Asher [on July 1, 1838 in Owen Co., Ind.] and they had 8 children[: William, Cynthia, John P., Isaac, James, Thomas, Melissa and Martesia.] Thirty years ago, a limb from a tree fell on his left shoulder, which caused permanent paralysis to his left arm. Wm. H. was his only son. Daughter Melissa married Wm. G. Ryan and daughter Martesia married Jas. Ryan. He is age 60. "Jacob Surber was born in Pulaski Co., Kentucky. He became an orphan at an early age and made his home with an older brother at Gosport, until he married Miss Catherine Asher, 7 July 1838. They had 8 children, 5 sons and 3 daughters, with 3 still living. His first wife died 14 January 1864, and in 1872, he married Mrs. Rachel Skelton; she died in August 1883. He was buried at Little Mount Church, Owen County."
