In August, his mother died, and later, in the fall of 1828, he came to Martinsville. He bought the William A. Washburn and Co. store in 1831-32, which he ran alone until 1837. Bigger's Rangers, and in 1813, he did picket duty at Stitt Hill in Morgan County. Giles' father, William Mitchell of Pennsylvania County, Virginia, was a soldier in the Continental Army during the Revolution." [A very long article, quoted briefly here.] [From the Martinsville Republican for July 9, 1885: "During the funeral of J.M. Mitchell Tuesday afternoon, all the businesses in the city were closed. He was the oldest business man, and might be called the father of businesses, in this community."] [The firm of J.M. & S.M. Mitchell was one of the two most extensive and successful owners and shippers from Morgan County, sending boats from their porkhouses in Martinsville down to New Orleans in the mid-1800s, according to Noah J. Major's "Pioneers of Morgan County."] |
