"Another Pioneer Gone -- Died at his residence in the city of Martinsville, on the 1st day of April, James Prather Sr. He was born in Fleming Co., Kentucky on the 4th day of August 1802. He came with his parents to Indiana in 1817, and settled in Jackson County when but 11 years old, and [went] from there to Morgan County in 1834. He was married in Jackson County on the 26th day of February 1824 to Josephine Haggard, by which union 12 children were born, 7 sons and 5 daughters. Two died in infancy, and two, May and Elizabeth, died after having arrived at the age of maturity. His wife died on the 16th day of August 1846. He again married, to Mrs. Almira Taylor on the 5th day of March 1847. He lived in Green Township until about 11 years ago. Since that time, he has resided in the city of Martinsville. He is buried at Centennial Church, Green Township, where the remains of his father, Basil Prather, are buried." |
