Other Age 10 years, 1 month, and 7 days. "From Monrovia -- Cecil Portis, son of Silas [and Mary Ann Bray] Portis, was killed last Sunday while driving a cow to pasture." [From the Diary of Anna Stanton Harvey for Sept. 23rd, 1888: "A very sad circumstance occurred this morning. Cecil Portus, taking Willits' cow to pasture, fastened the strap with a slip-knot round his waist, as he often did, though (he) had been repeatedly warned against it. The cow was a very gentle Jersey but she frightened and ran from Kenworthys' to Rushtons', drawing the strap so tightly it broke. When the men loosed him, his skull was broken in two or three places and he breathed only a few times after they got him to Tanseys'. His mother was at her father's, her brother having been badly hurt the evening before by his team running away, one wheel passing over his hips and the other over his chest; is better today. Mary Ann has been on the verge of insanity again for some weeks and it is expected she will become entirely unbalanced again; was raving this morning but calm this evening. The occurrence is regarded more as a providence than an accident. Cecil was bidding fair for a bad man; was about 16, but with his poor opportunities, we hope he was not accountable."]
