| Other | Age 51. Born in Highland County, Ohio, the firstborn son of Hiram and Louisa Stafford Matthews. Named for the Cary family who lived nearby and were dear friends of his parents. Spent his boyhood in Morgan County, Indiana. Married on March 10, 1844 to Hannah Van Winkle, the daughter of Hartness and Sarah King Van Winkle. Moved to Lafayette Co., Wisconsin in 1846. Father of five children. Daughter Elmyra was born in 1845; they then had four sons: Hiram (born June 6, 1847), Albert Edward (born Dec. 31, 1849), Ward (born Dec. 20, 1853), and Walter Clarence (born March 26, 1857). Civil War veteran: Co. E, 30th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry. He and his family moved to Crawford Co., Iowa in 1868. In December 1871, while working on the Dobson bridge across the Boyer River, Cary fell as the bridge gave way. He died from his injuries. |
