| Other | A Fatal Accident -- Mr. George Thacker was run over by a freight train, having both of his feet cut off, Monday, and he died that day. Supposedly, he had been drinking. He was the son of Lewis Thacker, deceased, and was married to Belle Shane 9 years ago, and they had 3 children. [From the Martinsville Republican for July 5, 1900: "Mrs. Mary B. Thacker, the wife of George Thacker, has petitioned that her 3 children be sent to the Indiana Children's Home in Hamilton County, which the county granted. The county will pay $.25 per person per day for their upkeep."] [From the Martinsville Republican for Oct. 1, 1891: "Peter Farr and Mrs. George Thacker and son went to Indianapolis, with the intention of never returning. Mr. Thacker found out about this and alerted the police. He picked up the child but allowed Farr and Mrs. Thacker to remain. She has been married twice and divorced from her first husband."] (Mary Belle Shane married a William R. Thacker on Nov. 22, 1886; he divorced her in early September 1889. She then married George Thacker, and after his death in 1899, she went on to marry a Thomas Callahan. Their divorce was granted in October 1901.") |
