| Other | Flora Flaitz, the butcher, was killed by William Lanier, a bartender. "Flaitz had been asked to leave the saloon, which he did on the urging of some friends, but never left the area. Instead, he waited until Lanier got off work and taunted him as Lanier started walking home and ended up [being shot and killed.]" (A jury later returned a verdict of justifiable homicide.) [In the Dec. 12, 1878 issue of the Martinsville Republican, it was reported that "In the bastardy case of Emaline Lanier vs. Flora Flaitz, she was awarded $500.00."] |
