| Other | Another Pioneer Gone -- William Fair (sic), an early settler and well known around Martinsville, died 16 January 1889 being near 84 years old. He was born in North Carolina...On 24 October 1826, he married Nancy Vanhoy who was 3 years his younger (sic). He and his wife came to Martinsville in April 1827. He purchased a cabin 1 1/2 miles East of Martinsville. As a boatman, he made 23 trips to the mouth of White River, 2 trips to Vicksburg, and 1 trip to New Orleans. On 30 December 1858, his first wife died; together they had 2 sons and 5 daughters. On 22nd of December 1860, he married Mrs. Malinda Hendricks Garrett, widow of Joel Garrett and a sister to Thompson Hendricks [another boatman]. They had 1 daughter and with 2 step daughters, one of which died...made up his second family. His 2 sons were in the Civil War. Parents: Michael and Mary Ann Fair. |
